Mercury is a highly toxic metal - Mercury is a highly toxic metal used in many industrial applications including florescent lamps. If spilled it can seep under floor boards where it remains slowly releasing toxic fumes to the air even after the building has been converted to commercial or residential use.

This former nail polish manufacturing business operated from the early 1980's until operations ceased in 1990. A site investigation conducted by ECI per ISRA identified soil and groundwater contamination associated with an aboveground storage tank (AST) farm. The primary contaminants included acetone, toluene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol and ethanol.
ECI installed a groundwater monitoring network, which included fifteen (15) bedrock wells designed to monitor groundwater quality within the different water bearing fractures of the Brunswick Aquifer. Hydrogeologic studies completed to characterize groundwater flow in this complex fractured bedrock aquifer included aquifer slug tests, in-well saline tracer tests, specific conductivity and temperature profiling and discrete sampling of individual bedding- plane fractures. This information was used to develop a conceptual groundwater flow model for the site which was subsequently validated by field data.
The hydrogeologic studies determined that the source of the groundwater contamination was located beneath the building and structurally up-dip from the most impacted well located outside of the building footprint. Following delineation of the contaminant plume a Remedial Action Workplan which includes groundwater extraction and enhanced bioremediation was prepared and approved by the NJDEP. The plan is in the initial stages of implementation.
